Flotation Reagent is a process for the selective separation of hydrophobic materials from hydrophilic materials. It is mainly used in the mineral processing, paper recycling and wastewater treatment industries. Flotation agents can be used in conjunction with mechanical mining to economically recover valuable metals from much lower grade ore than before.

The first stage is called roughing and produces a large amount of concentrate. It is to screen out the largest number of valuable minerals with the coarsest possible particle size. The rough flotation step is usually followed by a scavenger flotation step, which is applied to the roughing tailings. The goal is to recover any target minerals that were not recovered during the initial roughing phase. This can be achieved by changing the flotation conditions to be more stringent than the initial roughing, or some secondary grinding can be performed to further liberate.
